Overview

Dodge Caliber is a five-seater, four-door hatchback. For 2008, Dodge adds an SRT4 high-performance model to a lineup that already includes the SE, SXT and R/T. The exteriors get a sporty look with the introduction of performance-oriented features such as a rear spoiler, larger grille opening, separate turbocharger boost gauge, optional reconfigurable display, 19-inch wheels, and a one-inch lower suspension.

Powertrain and performance

The SE is equipped with a standard 1.8-liter, I4, 148-horsepower engine that achieves 24 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. A five-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard. The SRT4 is equipped with a standard 2.4-liter, I4, 285-horsepower, turbo engine that achieves 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

Body and Styling

The Caliber flaunts a crosshair grille with a longer nose, and has large wheels for a car of its size and class. Fifteen-inch steel wheels with wheel covers are standard on the SE, but the SXT jumps to 17-inch aluminum wheels, while the R/T has 18-inch wheels. The rear end has contemporary taillights. The SRT4 model features a larger grille opening, a unique rear spoiler and 19-inch wheels.

The interior has decent-quality materials and two-tone color schemes even in the base trim level. The trims have chrome accents on door handles, on cluster rings, on knobs for the heating, air conditioning and radio. Caliber has illuminated cup holder rings, an MP3-player holster, and a center armrest that slides forward three inches for improved comfort.

Safety Features

The 2008 Caliber comes with adequate safety features to protect occupants and driver in the event of a collision. It has all the necessary air bags plus standard side-curtain air bags and a driver knee air bag designed to keep the driver positioned properly for the primary restraints. An electronic stability system and traction control are optional on most models, but the stability system is standard on the SRT4.
