Overview
They call it a “home-on-the-road”. And now Chrysler is set to reveal the fifth-generation Dodge Grand Caravan at the Detroit Auto Show. The new vehicle will be on sale this fall. The Dodge Grand Caravan is offered in two trims: SE and SXT. Making its debut with the current generation is Swivel 'n Go seating, offering second-row captain's chairs that turn 180 degrees to face the third row. Unlike its competitors, the Chrysler group has no plans to exit the minivan market.
Powertrain and performance
The Grand Caravan offers three engine choices: a 3.3-liter, flex-fuel V-6 that’s good for 170 horsepower and works with a four-speed automatic transmission; a 3.8-liter V-6 that produces 198 horsepower and is mated to a six-speed automatic; a new 4.0-liter V-6 that pumps out 240 horsepower and is mated to a six-speed transmission. The new six-speed automatic transmission is a first in a minivan.
Body and Styling
For most minivans buyers it is the interior that counts, mostly seating arrangement. And the Grand Caravan doesn't disappoint when it comes to seating flexibility. Among the options offered is Swivel 'n Go, second-row captain's chairs that rotate 180 degrees to face the third row. They let passengers face each other, and because the two seats rotate independently and slide fore and aft, even second-row passengers can face each other. For the first time, the Grand Caravan also offers power-folding 60/40-split third-row seats with one-touch up or down. Dodge has integrated a child seat into the second-row bench.
Safety Features
Standard safety features include side-curtain air bags for all three rows, which also provide rollover protection. There are antilock brakes, traction control, and an electronic stability system. Two options are offered to ease backing up and parking: a sonar ParkSense audible system and a rearview camera.
