Overview
For 2008, Dodge has redesigned the Charger’s instrument panel and added more standard features to the R/T and SXT models. Chargers come in base SE and performance-oriented R/T trim levels. An SXT package is also offered. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but SXT and R/T models are available with all-wheel drive. Dodge includes a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, inclusive of towing assistance.
Powertrain and performance
The base SE and the SXT are powered by a 250-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine. The R/T receives a fiercer 5.7-liter, Hemi V-8 producing 340 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. The Daytona R/T produces 350 horsepower with a 5.7-liter, Hemi V-8, and 390 pound-feet of torque. A more powerful SRT8 comes with a 6.1-liter, Hemi V-8 engine that generates 425 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. All models have a five-speed automatic with an AutoStick feature for manual gear selection. A multi displacement system (MDS) results in up to 20 percent improved fuel economy. EPA estimates are 18/26 mpg (city/highway) on the four-speed automatic and 15/22 mpg (city/highway) on the five-speed automatic.
Body and Styling
The 2008 Charger is styled to look like a coupe, with a sweeping fastback, tilted windshield and sloping roofline. Several packages add significant upgrades with distinct features. The instrument panel and gauge cluster have been redesigned; and for 2008 new fabric has been used for the cloth seats. The five-seat interior wears a two-tone color scheme, and features front bucket seats and a 60/40-split folding rear seat.
Safety Features
Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes, traction control, anti-skid system, curtain-side air bags, and front side air bags. NHTSA ratings for passenger/driver safety and side impact tests (rear) are excellent, side impact (front) and rollover ratings are 'good'. IIHS ratings for crash offset are also good.
