Overview

The Dodge Durango made its debut as a midsize sport utility vehicle for the 1998 model year. Modeled on the lines of the Dakota pickup, Durango is a traditional truck-type SUV with seating configurations for five, seven or eight. For 2008, Dodge Durango gets a more powerful V-8 engine. It is available in SXT, SLT, Adventurer and Limited trims. Dodge includes a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, inclusive of towing assistance.

Powertrain and performance

A 210-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 engine powers the rear-drive SXT and SLT versions. All other models, including AWD models, receive a new 303-horsepower, 4.7-liter V-8. A 335-horsepower, 5.7-liter, Hemi V-8 is optional on all but the SXT; Chrysler's multi-displacement system cylinder deactivation features on the Hemi V-8. Standard transmission is a four-speed or five-speed automatic. All models get rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. A low-range gear for off-road driving is available on AWD models. Fuel economy is 14/19 mpg (city/highway) for the four-speed automatic and 13/17 mpg (city/highway) on the five-speed automatic. With a maximum towing capacity of 8,950 pounds, the Durango can pull more weight than most other full-size SUVs in the segment.

Body and Styling

The Dodge Durango has an imposing presence with its signature crosshair grille, short front and rear overhangs, and powerful wheel arches. Designed as a highly functional family car, the Durango can hold up to eight occupants when equipped with three rows of seats; a five-seat configuration is also available. Each trim upgrades with generous levels of equipment on several packages. Cargo volume behind the third row increases to 102.4 cubic feet with both rear seats folded down.

Safety Features

Standard safety features on the Dodge Durango include anti-lock brakes, anti-skid system, and curtain-side air bags. The Dodge Durango earned a five-star rating (the government's highest frontal crash test rating) for both driver and front passenger safety.
